Taking a walk along the Chemnitz and learning about music (hi)stories is impossible? Not for long! The project Kamenica Musica will make it happen. In cooperation with musicians from in and around Chemnitz, as well as with our European partner cities, we will develop accessible InfoPoints in public that will allow for music to be experienced by everyone.

The reason: Music can only rarely be heard in public despite it being omnipresent in our urban space. Many productions by music groups or individuals in our area are only available behind closed doors, which can only be opened by paying an entrance fee. These musicians and their work will be made visible and accessible through our project Kamenica Musica. We will stay true to the motto of the cultural capital of 2025 – “C the unseen” – because music is not only played on Broadway and in the Elbphilharmonie but right here in Chemnitz as well!

The idea: Information boards which will teach passers-by about the music history of Chemnitz will be put out in the open along a walking trail. Various groups and people will be involved in this, as well as different styles and forms of music. In our concept, every story finds a place – whether it be chamber choirs, classical composers or youth music. Of course, the (hi)stories should not only be read but they should be heard as well. The stops will therefore all have speakers or a scannable QR code, with which you will be able to listen to pieces that fit the topic of the board.

The highlight: All the pieces and songs we feature will be created specifically for this project. We will work with local artists along with people and groups from partner cities in countries such as Czechia and Poland. Composer Carl Maria von Weber said that music “…can be understood by thousands of men – who all feel differently…” – this is exactly why music is a perfect tool for establishing and consolidating international contacts with our European partners. At the same time, musicians get the chance to present themselves publicly as a piece in the puzzle that is the music scene of Chemnitz.

The place: The walk will start, where the two rivers Würschnitz and Zwönitz meet and the river Chemnitz starts. The trail will lead along the course of the river right into the centre of the city. Through nature, past the intervention area “Flussbad Altchemnitz” and the Europark with its future international dance centre, through the Stadtpark right to the Weltecho and Falkeplatz.
